Over the years, I’ve played a lot of games. Mainly on my own admittedly, but sometimes I get to play with other people! The scope for multiplayer fun is huge now as it takes no effort to jump online and game with your friends, however my best multiplayer memories have usually been crowded around a console.
Five of these come to mind, so you know what that means… it’s Wob Wob Rob Top 5 time!
STREETFIGHTER II TURBO (SNES)
Streetfighter II Turbo could well be the single game I have invested more hours than any other into. Me and my bro Mikey regularly duelled it out, so much so that one of our “Best of 3” progressions got up to a staggering “Best of 101”! I’m looking forward to reigniting that rivalry for you all to see.
SUPER BOMBERMAN II (SNES)
The Bomberman series is one of the funnest of all time. Super Bomberman II happens to be the only one I’ve ever played, but again, Mikey and I played the hell out of it! While we never owned a Multitap to enable 4 player SNES play, we regularly did 2 player scraps. While I fondly remember the heated battles, my residing memory was when the NPCs would randomly screw us over, especially by the mean Red Bomberman. A death at the hands of the stupid as hell Blue Bomberman was always the most shameful thing that could happen in a match!
I was obsessed with this game, as were my mates. I was 13 when it came out, and my weekends regularly consisted of four of us, all crammed onto a single top bunk, eating pizza and playing hours of Goldeneye. I got so good at this game that the only way it was fair was to do 3 against 1, and I still owned them all!
DR ROBOTNIKS MEAN BEAN MACHINE (GC)
One of the greatest Gamecube purchases I made was Sonic Mega Collection. As a Nintendo head I’m loyal to my main man Mario for life, but there’s no denying the sheer quality of 16 bit Sonic and being able to indulge in these Sega classics was wonderful.
Surprisingly however, the game I played most here was Dr Robotniks Mean Bean Machine. This is a tough Puyo Puyo based puzzler, so it’s not for the faint hearted! You can't just dip in and have casual game. Invest the hours however, and you will be rewarded with one of the most addictive puzzling experiences out there. Me and Mikey got so good that it lead to Streetfighter style marathons described previously.
WARIOWARE INC. (GC)
During my time at EA, one perk was that on our breaks we could pretty much play anything we like in our breaks as the consoles we tested games on could pretty much play anything. When I unassumingly brought in Warioware Inc, I could not have predicted one game turning lunch time into a legendary affair. It’s a wildly inventive and hilarious game which is instantly pick up and playable even if you’ve never seen it before. It regularly created situations where we had fully grown men rolling on the floor crying with laughter.
I've mentioned before that I'm looking to get a regular Super Glenister Bros series going where I look for the best multiplayer experiences in the land! Watch this space.
